Re:
"Spanish for Gringos" Dear Ed: Phillips Builders has received such a
strongly positive response and lasting result from your course "Spanish for
Gringos" that I felt compelled to write and let you know. A large percentage of our
subcontractors and field laborers are Hispanic. Seeking a means by which to
improve relations with and bridge the language barrier between our field
supervision and this population we fortunately discovered your company. "Concept is outstanding",
"Ed is an excellent instructor", allows you to communicate almost
immediately", "subs are less threatened and are more responsive
now" are just a few of the unsolicited comments I have heard. Drawing the participants into the
process of tailoring the course to our industry was a great icebreaker and tool
to open up these outdoorsy-types. Everyone got "into it". One
superintendent's block mason stopped speaking English to him during the course
to help push him to learn and retain the material. Our field supervisors greatly
appreciated the opportunity to expand their skills and more effectively
communicate with their workers. And, our subcontractors feel more respected and
less threatened. Consequently, responsiveness has improved dramatically. One
supervisor commented, "the Hispanic guys even are better about picking up
the trash now that I can ask instead of pointing and signaling". The bottom line is, Phillips Builders
